Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ… 2 Peter 3:18

The happiness of every parent is to see their children grow in all area of their lives. A mother, whose child has a stunted growth, is never happy. She would do everything within her ability to ensure her child receives the best and make the appropriate physical growth.

Although a mother is mostly committed to the well-being of her children but, desiring growth is not limited to a mother alone. In every aspect of our endeavours, we desire to grow. A worker quests for career growth, a farmer desires to see his crops grow and yield fruits, a student strives to pass his examination and advance to the next class, even governments , come up with economic policies that will enhance national development.

In a similar vein, God desires His children to grow spiritually. Just like a mother would feel sad if, there is no commensurate growth for her child, so do God feels when, a Christian is not developing  spiritually.

When we talk about spiritual growth what do we mean? It means coming into the full knowledge of God in terms of; His ways, His precepts, His will and His Lordship. It also implies having a personal understanding of God in a very intimate way, after being born again.

While the universal definition of growth suggests an outward development, spiritual growth dwells on the inside. It focuses on the Christian’s personal knowledge and understanding of God.   In Mathew 16:15, Jesus asked His disciples “Who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Here, the disciples’ understanding of who their Master is was put to test. If you are asked today, who is God? Do you have an explanation to give? Do you know God?

Growing spiritually starts with establishing a relationship with God. This time, not having a passive relationship with God, but, having a wholesome knowledge of Him. You might know someone who lives in your neighborhood, you can tell that he drives a red sports car, know his physical attributes but, that doesn’t mean you can actually give an account of the person. The same is true about God. Everyone knows that, God created the heavens and the earth; He is the Almighty God etc, that’s just a passive knowledge of Him. God wants you to know Him experientially. Like a mother and child or husband and wife relationship – above the ordinary, more intimate.

God’s major purpose of bringing us into this world is for us to have a relationship with Him. Once this is established, every other blessing follows suit. (See Mathew 6:33) God is calling you today; do not reject His offer of salvation. Would you give God a chance to come into your heart?

Lord Jesus, I want to know you deeply. Please quicken my spirit to experience you personally in Jesus name, amen.
