Text:  Colossians 3:13  Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.

There are several people who said they’ve forgiven their offenders but discovered they still feel bitter deep in their hears against them. They desire to actually forgive their offenders but wonder why this feeling of anger and hatred still stirs up from their hearts every now and then.

The truth is, the power to forgive totally is the work of the Holy Spirit. Though we desire to be set free from the bondage of unforgiveness, but our will power cannot deliver us.

When a tree is cut down, leaving the tree trunk still in the ground, the leaves and the branches simply die and dry off. But, the tree is partially alive because, the root which is the power house of the tree is still inside the ground. So, when dew or rain comes upon the tree trunk, it regenerates and leaves starts sprouting up again.

The above illustration is a vivid example of what you might be experiencing when you cannot totally forgive. It goes thus; you have forgiven your offender, (the tree is cut down) and the outward issues has being resolved but the tree trunk has not been uprooted(the root of the bitterness has not been dogged out) Therefore, if there is any slightest provocation or a related offense from this offender (rain touching the tree trunk) it brings alive the hurt within you and you will immediately recall the past incident.

SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

The bible tells us in Isaiah 36:26-27 “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them”

Here, God is saying that, He will remove the stony heart from His children and replace it with a fleshy heart. Meaning, He will remove the root of hatred which is ultimately rooted in the heart and give us a heart that easily forgives and let go. Compare stony with fleshy, the former is difficult and stubborn while the later is fragile and meek – that is The Holy Spirit. Now, The Holy Spirit does not force Himself upon us, we have to willingly and earnestly seek Him. He is the One to dig out that unwanted feeling in your heart and fill you with His feeling of love and peace. Do you have the Holy Spirit within you?

However, satan is the one who triggers those ill feelings. He does that through deception and manipulation of the mind – This is only when you allow him access by entertaining those negative thoughts or imaginations. How do you defeat satan?  By speaking the word of God against him and refusing to be instigated by him.

I want you to understand that, it is God’s will for you to forgive those who offended you. Just lean on His grace, invite the Holy Spirit into your heart and He will help you to dig out the spirit of unforgiveness from your life. Living with unforgiveness is a grave bondage. You can never know you are in the prison of the mind until you totally forgive those people that offended you.

Receive the grace to let go.
