I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. Luke 15:18
Many persons have been taught to believe that God is cruel, wicked without any iota of mercy. They feel He is always out to destroy everyone who dare not honor Him, as a result, they have missed that most important aspect of God – He is a loving Father.
Countless times, some once fervent believers have wondered how they got to the point of being very far away from God, prayerless and cannot even read and meditate on the word of God anymore. This is because; they didn’t know how and when to retrace their steps back to God, having gone astray.
The story of the prodigal son is a typical example of going back to God the Father even if you feel there isn’t any reason why God should forgive you. The prodigal son left with his share of the father’s wealth, squandered it and started living a pitiable life, feeding on food reserved for pigs. One day, he reasoned within him and said, “I will go back to his father and ask for forgiveness”. When he did, his father received him warmly and forgave all his trespasses.
Now, more than anything you can ever think of, God wants you to return to Him and retrace your steps. It might be that, you have gone so far away that, you have gotten yourself involved in things you are not proud of. You might not be sure if God can actually forgive your sins as they are many. Maybe, you have the desire to serve God but do not know where or how to start all over again. There is truly no need to be uncertain, God loves you beyond your imagination, He is calling you to rededicate your life to Him now and experience His great mercy and grace.
If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9.
