The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord. Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath. Joshua 9:14-15
During the sojourn of the Israelites to the land of Canaan, God wrought many astounding miracles for them. Some of which were; the crossing of River Jordan and the fall of Jericho. Hearing their exploits, and much more that they will do, the Gibeonites; a nearby nation disguised and craftily manipulated Joshua to make a league with them and not kill them with the other nations. Unknowingly to Joshua, that was a trap. However, Joshua agreed to keep them as servants among them, thereby, sparing their lives. The truth about the Gibeonite’s true identity was later discovered by Joshua and his men, but the deed was already done. It could not be reversed. So, the children of Israel had to live with the starngers against their will. This is so because, Joshua didn’t bother to first inquire of the Lord before entering into a treaty (sealed by an oath) with the Gibeonites. (Please read up the story in Joshua 9:1-27)
DECEPTION – A TOOL OF THE WICKED ONE.
Right from the early times, deception has been a major tool used by satan against believers alike. It was a tool used against Eve to plunge the world into sin. Deception is eating badly into the world like a plague of worms. Many persons walk around in deception and total falsehood. There is a fear of who to even trust. Many people appear goodly, but deep inside, they are ravening wolves. Deception is one of the characteristics of the end time. There are product’ deception, business deception, character deception, parental deception, emotional deception, religious deception among many others. “Take heed that no man deceive you” (Luke 21:8)
DO NOT TAKE DECISIONS WITHOUT CONSULTING GOD.
Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths. Proverbs 3:5, 6
Many lives have been trapped in danger and hopes dashed because, people no longer ask God for guidance before embarking on a project or taking a decision. Joshua, the leader of the army of Israel was caught up in this web. Should we attribute it to negligence or insensitivity? Maybe he felt it wasn’t really a serious matter, like it was something he could well handle alone without bothering God for direction. Even in little matters, God wants us to inquire of Him. Call unto me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things which thou knoweth not. Jeremiah 33:3. Human beings are limited in knowledge and understanding, hence the need for God at all times.
CONSEQUENCES OF NOT SEEKING GOD’S GUIDANCE
Joshua’s treaty with the Gibeonites had a devastating effect (great famine) on the children of Israel hundreds of years after the treaty was made. (Read it up in 2 Samuel 21 :1-end) Saul the king of Israel in that time, fought and killed the Gibeonites, being unaware maybe, of the covenant between them. Who would have thought such a careless agreement by Joshua will hunt the children of God centuries after? This is a very striking lesson. Decisions taken over the wind can mar a person’s future and can even affect unborn generations. If Joshua had asked from God who knows the end from the beginning, before accepting the Gibeonites, that trap would have been abated.
In life, applying wisdom in all we do is very paramount to overcoming the incessant snares of satan. We need godly wisdom and direction in order not to fall a prey to the enemy. Anyone who embarks on a journey without a roadmap or compass is sure to miss the way. Same is true with anyone who depends on head knowledge and human wisdom to sail through the challenges of life.
The Gibeonites knew very well that God was with the Israelites, owing to the numerous victories they recorded over their enemies. They knew it will be a futile effort trying to engage them in a war. Therefore, they resorted to pretense and deception to gain access into them and became a torn in their flesh. Satan is very subtle. He knows people’s weak points, and knows the strategy to use against them – be guided.
The world is swimming in hypocrisy. Many people are not who they claim to be. One thing is certain, you can never make a mistake when you walk with Jesus. Read your bible continuously and pray, so you can decipher deception when it comes knocking. Don’t fall a victim to falsehood, allow Jesus to guide you in all your endeavours.
